Utopia Planitia loosely translated means the plain of paradise. In 1976 NASA's space probe Viking 2 scored a touchdown on planet Mars on September 3rd. Think back and let's imagine our happy world in 1976. Faster than the speed of sound, Concorde made its first flight across the Atlantic Ocean in under three amazing hours.

Conversely Star Trek's USS Concord NCC-68711 starship (TNG "All Good Things") takes seconds to cover that distance. The Apple Computer company was formed on February 4th, 1976. Earth's first spaceflight in the search for extraterrestrial life results in exploring MARS!!!

In 1996 scientists discover microscopic evidence of ancient life on MARS!!!

The lander successfully sets down 54.6 million kilometers away in '76 and takes images for Earth's happy ball of beings. Unfortunately no Martians to high five us back but to quote Counsellor Troi in TNG, "I sense the holding back."

A recent NASA discovery in 2016 revealed a large amount of underground ice in the Utopia Planitia region of Mars. So we now know it's possible to sustain humanoid life on MARS!!! Its only logical to surmise Martians are hiding somewhere on the Red planet."

If only the inhabitants weren't so shy of Earthers somebody was just saying the other day.  In Star Trek's 51 year history, Utopia Planitia can be overlooked from the Martian hills walking along the surface. Starfleet's spaceship Yards orbiting the planet also gives a clear view of the largest impact basin 16,625 kilometers above the Utopia Planitia region on Mars! So where are the Martians hiding?

These starships: USS Fredrickson (NCC-42111) USS Galaxy (NCC-70637) USS Yamato (NCC-71807) USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) USS Odyssey (NCC-71832) USS Equinox (NCC-72381) USS Defiant (NX-74205) USS Voyager (NCC-74656) USS Sao Paulo (NCC-75633) were developed, refit and or built at Star Trek's Federation Utopia Planitia Fleetyards orbiting Mars.

Earth Scientists at NASA first discovered Utopia Planitia on Mars.

Science Fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson author of Red Mars explores the future colonization and world building of "Utopia Planitia" on the Sci Fi world. (Research took 17 years)

QUESTION Which Sci Fi creator/writer began using "Utopia Planitia" in his Science Fiction work first?

1. Star Trek's - Gene Roddenberry

2. Red Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson

You decide. Guess long and prosper!

SciFiVisions Parody

A trekker I know withdrew from the original RPG Sci-Fi visions site a while ago, but at least the name lives on!. Heres what went down. Engineer Ernie was tranquilized sky high to oblivion for reasons which were completely illogical but because some other players weren't interested in collaboration.....

There Ernie was pumped up with cordrazine like some science project isolated in Sickbay .... Believe me the USS Audacious RPG was the 23rd century version of the Titanic waiting to happen - which it did. Nubik vented in one quick post and well have fun reading.

First off, here's the inspirational poster for each sci-fi visions character:

T'Ehklah Ric Bermud Ernie V'ncent Aura Nubik

Now, a mini-post written in the style of each player.

V'ncent: "Kreena, beam us up!" says V'ncent. The planet suddenly explodes, taking the ancient population and its potential storyline for intervening in a civil war with it. The crew had beamed up only seconds earlier, but all other life forms were destroyed. "That was close," V'ncent says. "The planet has been destroyed," says Aura logically.

Ernie: Now wait just a darn minute - the whole planet blew up, just what in tarnation is going on? Does anyone have a clue whats going on?  We've got problems. Hey, let me out of here! help, someone, please. No no..... please not that again.

Chief Engineer, Bermud: bermud beems down wit hipo cures all the peeple weres ernie?

Ric: Unknown to the rest of the crew, Blackhawk had been a researcher in an advanced science team working on transporter technology.

Ric calmly reconfigured the transporter pattern buffer for maximum compression using an implant in his left big toe, then transported the entire planet into the buffer mere seconds before the planet was destroyed.

"I'll decompress it close to Terra and we'll just keep the bits we liked," he joked.

V'ncent: A destruction wave from the planet hit Audi broadside. "The ship is breaking up," said V'ncent. "But look, there's another ship nearby. Let's beam aboard." Nubik, feel free to emote something at this point.

Nubik: Nubik scanned the ship, detecting at least one life form on the bridge and a group of them in the cargo bay. "Aura, bring the hypos that the EMH and Diane developed, we haven't all had our anti-virus shots. Perhaps we should send a marine crew aboard to check if it's safe?"

T'Ehklah elbowed Nubik aside and scanned the ship quickly. "Audi, transport me directly to the bridge of that ship."

T'Ehklah knew instinctively that there would be a breathable atmosphere aboard the ship, just as she knew that there would be at most one lifeform on the bridge and some disposable lifeforms elsewhere. The lifeform spun around.

"You!" it said. "Yes me! Now die!"

She swung her bat'leth in an arc and took the lifeform's two heads off in a single stroke. "The ship is safe to come aboard, I've taken the bridge," she sneered into her combadge, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow. TAG: everyone! That's about it.

Star Trek Discovery Images and Trailer

Heres some fascinating new shots from Star Trek Discovery's stellar new Sci Fi series released only last week via Netflix.

USS Shenzhou - Captain and No1

In the first visual, we see Captain Georgiou of the USS Shenzhou (Michelle Yeoh) and Commander Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) trekking through the desert but what is their mission?

Captain Georgiou

All we know is the Captain and No1 are passing through "terra incognita" in a region from the pilot episode but the trailer reveals much more.... Meanwhile, in another visual No1 - Commander Burnham is planning on beaming over to a Klingon vessel....

Commander Burnham

Only recently Star Trek's brand new cast took time out from filming to entertain San Diego comic con fans. A 45-minute trailer included news on the characters and a look at the series with fast paced action packed scenes, star wars phaser effect fighting, "fire first, questions later" show case video feature!

The show's debut in September 24th won't leave you disappointed believe me. Star Trek Discovery is boldly going to hyper drive fans with cosmic explosions, forcefields, smart aliens with analytical prowess determined to fight to the end. Available with Netflix, CBS and others. I guess its decision time.

Enjoy. Live long and Prosper

Stardate 42976.1
Original Airdate:
Writers: Maurice Hurley, Hans Beimler and Richard Manning
Director: Rob Bowman.
Season 2, Episode 22.
Star Trek TNG "Shades of Grey"

During a geological survey on "Surata IV" Commander Riker is jabbed in the leg by a mysterious vine on a spooky alien planet. We soon learn Riker's life is on the line unless Datas quick reflexes and Chief Engineers Geord's enhanced vision can capture the "creature" quick smart.

Meanwhile Rikers immune system is being infected by the organism. Even though he beamed up using the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D, 24th-century transporters bio filters,  Space Age technology still failed to filter out the microbes spreading fast to No 1's brain. So now what? Is it game over for Riker? well not quite.

Dr Pulaski, the female version of Dr McCoy, LOL, (Dr Beverly Crushers temporary replacement,) links in with the ships exotic counselor Betazoid Deanna Troi. The prognosis is looking bad but together the two make a startling discovery! Endorphins!

So what have we got? A sample of the infectious vine - results inconclusive. Microbes infecting Rikers nerves which can't be removed surgically. So now here's poor guy Riker, comatose hooked up to a gawd awful machine which sends electrical impulses to his brain keeping him alive. At first its hit and miss but instead of saving the dude, the impulses stimulate romantic dreams promoting the microbes growth!

Luckily Deanna is able to assist Dr Pulaski reawaken Commander Rikers darkest memories during his "comatose dream sleep." The painful death of Tasha Yar and other negative dreams, "Data some things got me!" induce different endorphins with an opposite effect on the microbes. The plan actually works but what a trip it must have been for Riker when he woke up!

Dr Crusher's Medical Miracles

Dr Beverly Crusher is the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D and a real knockout. Since her husbands departure Beverly's bond with Captain Picard developed over seven years with some sweet solo performances in Star Trek TNG series. The actress Gates McFadden also starred in 4 of Star Trek's TNG movies. To her credit Crusher embraced a historically male driven profession in Starfleet, on stardate 2364 and became a StarTrek icon after seven years doing the show.

Her performances are supreme in "The Naked Now" where Crusher is playing an emotional, illogical female with needs, who gets intoxicated by a virus on stardate 41209.2 In fact the entire crew totally lose their inhibitions and put on a stellar job "acting wasted." How the filming party kept straight faces with Crusher unbuttoning before Picard on the job saying these lines......

"My dear Captain, you owe me something!" demands Beverly in Picards Ready Room. The poor guy tries to escape and runs for the door. "You do realize that don't you? I'm a woman I haven't had the comfort of a husband, a man." she blurts out gasping between all the heavy breathing.

Picard's reaction?

"Not now doctor.......PLEAASSSSSEEEEEEEEE"

Remember who said "she's one sweet looking broad?" in Dixon Hill's 1941 holodeck adventure, "the Big Goodbye?" All dressed up to the nines in satin and spandex, Beverly is a real tease in this episode. She hikes her skirt up, nearly trips on her shoes, swallows gum not realizing 20th century customs, wears nylons dragged up her legs and is offered Tommy Dorsey tickets, not bad eh?

The USS Enterprise-D's secret "Dancing Doctor"   fully trained in Starfleet procedures for personal exploration where no lifeforms get to play hanky, panky and what happens? the holodeck freezes up!!!

Some say the good doctor is hot and daring to venture out as the first female Chief Medical Surgeon aboard the USS Enterprise-D starship. Crusher represents the only kind of hope to boldly engage with the unknown without a phaser.  She beams down with Starfleet military officers Data, Geordi,Riker and Chief of Security Tasha Yar to Vagra II, right into the front lines! Behold terrifying Armus. -  I mean this dude was one Bad Slime with attitude and it SPOKE! Not the sort who wanted love either!

So lets face it, we know we're watching Science Fiction, when characters like these..............
1. Dr Dalen Quaice,
2. Trill  male Ambassador "Odan,"
3. Wrathful lifeform Armus in "Skin of Evil,"
4. Android in "Data's Day,"
5. the Trill female "Odan" in Star Trek TNG "The Host"
..............get to hang out with super space babe hotness.

What say you?

Here are the tools of Dr Beverly Crusher's profession. These "Medical Miracles" include the most advanced Enterprise-D medical equipment and procedures practiced within the United Federation of Planets today.
Cryogenic open-heart procedure

1.) Captain Picard required a Cryogenic open-heart procedure used in conjunction with a fully operational sterilization field in Dr Beverly Crushers Sickbay aboard the USS Enterprise-D by Kathryn Pullasky. The simple procedure is used to repair damaged cardiac tissues using temperatures near absolute zero. Before the operation its vital to know what negative or positive markers make up the patients blood type.

2.)Medical Diagnostic Bed with the overhead scanner. Its been rumoured that NASA were facinated with the orange bed covers in The Uss Enterprise 1701 Sickbay and at the time had a good look at them. Heres TNG 24th century biobeds compare to Dr McCoys TOS 23rd Century ones.

3.)Neurocortical monitor is a small sensor device which is placed on a patients forehead to record encephalographic data. A neuro cortical monitor could also be configured to noify medical personnel when preprogrammed readings are detected.

4.)Dr Beverly's Hypospray! Never beams down without it. So now the Hypo will be used by Enterprise-D's highly trained Sickbay staff (for subcutaneous and intramuscular administration of medication) to keep Picard knocked out while he gets a new heart. The hypospray has become an inspiration for real-world engineers who have invented devices based on this "device" for extremely fine, high pressure, aerosuspension delivery system eliminating the need for needles.

5.)Dr Beverly Crushers Tricordrazine. This drug neurostimulant is usually administered subcutaneously. Trycordrazine was successfully used to stimulate neural activity in Commander William Riker when he suffered neural injury on an away mission on planet Surata IV. Tricordrazine is based on the lifesaving medical wonder drug treatment Cordrazine.

6.)The Somnetic Inducer is small neural padd recommended by Dr Crusher to induce sleep in humanoids. So when Geordi complains he's been having a bout after some brain washing to turn him into a killer assassin, the good doctor isolates a slight abnormality in the visual cortex and recommends a complete examination at Starbase 36. Does she think anymore about it? Nah We're all one big happy Enterprise family! Geordi is one of the Good Guys. So in 2367 Crusher hands La Forge a somnetic inducer to fix the malfunction in his VISOR suspected of causing him insomnia.

7.) The Medical TR-580 Tricorder is a multipurpose compact scientific device with sensors, computers and a database capable of downloading and scanning for convenience. Dr Beverly Crusher usually carries one on away missions. State of the art technology has enabled the completion of starship missions and operations successfully. Specialized tricorders are available for engineering, scientific or medical applications. Various creators have modified the design over time, Wah Chang, Brick Price, Bill George and Rick Sternbach.

8.)Dr Crushers Sickbay computers are independent marvels of computer technology capable of analyzing and isolating complex medical problems/viruses in the 24th century. In our modern age, obtaining a vaccine is a relatively logical process of tapping into a large medical database and running a few tests. The results are fed through the sickbay labs whereby a formula is quickly processed and given to the patient.

Wow you read this far! Thanks for stopping by. I always wanted to write about the Dancing doctor, hehe.

Disruptor Beam - A Good Day To Lie

Players and Star Trek fans can now look forward to Disruptor Beam's Star Trek Timelines must save the day in the latest month long mega event...... The video “A Good Day to Lie”, delves into iconic Klingons, bat'tehla fighting and all that great Warrior honor stuff.

Apparently, the galaxy is in chaos again.  Here's Disruptor Beams new “A Good Day to Lie” trailer, so enjoy...

As part of the Klingon fun, players have access to brand-new Klingon-themed Gauntlets, limited-time Distress Calls, and rewards, as well as many new characters such as the legendary Kortar, a mythological god-slayer with immense power.

The first of four events in the series, “Scales of Power,” started last Thursday, July 6, So now "we the players" thats us are expected to enter the fierce realm of Klingon politics after Chancellor Martok has gone missing.

In his absence, several galactic powers are vying for control of the now open seat on the Klingon High Council. Think about it. This gives Fleet captains a unique chance to steer the Klingon Empire into an age of tolerance or economic prosperity really want more power.

Subsequent events will include “When Giants Walk”, “The Heart of the Empire,” and “Blood for Blood.”

(“July is Klingon Month in Star Trek Timelines!”) translated into the Klingon language is:

World Maestro Isaac Asimov - The Foundation Series

Hugo Award winner, Nebula Award winner and friend of Gene Roddenberry, Isaac Asimov is considered one of the Big Three" science fiction writers of his generation with hundreds of entertaining books to his credit. Most of the sci-fi maestro's paperbacks are available on Amazon with the Foundation Trilogy in hardback also. So is Foundation any good I hear you cry?

The Foundation Series is a sweet read which clearly shows the emperor's influence during the timeline. Many Science Fiction stories have a hero vs the machine - to fire our imaginations, so far I have determined that there isn't really a continuity of characters from beginning to end except for the mathematician, Hari Seldon but even he dies. There are others like his assistant, Gaal Dornick. Seldon's sidekick. His crucial discovery is so fantastic, its suppressed but during the series the mathematician is later brought to stand trial. The trilogy spans the entire galaxy and not one ET make a grand entrance. Many come and go like Emperor Cleon but I won't be a killjoy.

So if you're an Asimov fan, Geek, or Nerd you're in for a treat. While the technology appears Flash Gordon, the trekker will obviously enjoy Asimov's Futurism. His "through the lens" perspective gives a unique timeline experience covering the ages but all is not what it seems.

The first volume Foundation establishes the colony Terminus called The Foundation, and the various challenges and crises it has to face and solve in the increasing chaotic galactic empire.

Foundation and Empire, the second volume, deals with a new unforeseen challenge in the ascendancy of The Mule, a mutant with extraordinary powers that can enslave whole planets and even causes the collapse of the first Foundation.

In Second Foundation the final volume, as the title suggests, the Second Foundation comes into its own as a force to be contended with. Unlike the first foundation, who were masters of technology, the members of this society are masters of mind control, so have a fair chance to defeat The Mule.

The setting is in a gigantic galaxy wide empire with nuclear gadgets and offbeat vibrant effects. However, these are only interesting gizmos without too much importance to the major story regarding their function.

Gaal Dornick springs forth as a dedicated Hardcase in the beginning only to disappear mysteriously before the end. Hari Seldon is another character whose interaction held onto my curiosity because his discovery makes you think outside the box, Psychohistory Duh What?  I became an Asimov fan quite by accident when I read the Last Question, which got me started on futurism, science, technology and I've been hooked ever since.

Long Live the Foundation!

Star Trek Discovery Trailer and Fun Facts

What can we expect from Star Trek Discovery?

 1. Starfleet and Klingons clash in the first trailer for 'Star Trek: Discovery'
2. We see Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and First Officer Michael Burnham "Number One"(Sonequa Martin-Green) trekking over sandy dunes on a remote planet, before beaming up to a Starfleet vessel.
3. We get a look at new Starfleet uniforms and new Klingons.

The "new aliens" were preserved during a cryogenic sleep and now everyone knows they're Klingons except for one inescapable fact.....

Just look at his hands.......   Monsters! Agggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!

4. A mysterious "object of unknown origin" on the far reaches of Federation space leads to an engaging encounter with Klingons...
5. What ship is Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) in charge of? For the first time ever, the lead character won’t be the captain. Its No 1. Take a good look because here's Sonequa Martin-Green in 3 leading action scenes.

NO 1

6. How many captains are there one or two?
7. Klingons don't take prisoners and Starfleet doesn't fire first. It seems the USS Discovery NCC 1031 will face inescapable conflict. The Federation is at war with Klingons.
8. How will hand to hand combat play out when aliens "beam aboard" and want to get physical?

9. No Worf. A theater critic expanded on statements made to Trekmovie that less than 1 percent of what Michael Dorn made in his last contract as Worf was offered for him to appear in the new show.
10. When asked whether the show will premiere in the fall, CBS Interactive President Marc DeBevoise simply said, “We’re not stating.”
11. Set 10 years before the original series “new crews,” “new villains,” “new heroes,” and “new worlds” We know Iconic characters like Kirk, Spock might appear, Sarek (James Frain) has been cast.  So that sets the year around 2255 with the new show bridging the gap between Enterprise and the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 crew.

12. Star Trek: Discovery has expanded its original series order to fifteen episodes continuing to push the boundaries where no aliens have gone before... Apparently, there's an incident in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never explored? Maybe the Redshirts know? A lot happens around the year 2255 in trek's timeline... Do you know what it is?

It's been confirmed that it's not Axanar, the Kobayashi Maru, or the Romulan war. So what sectors of alien space does that leave us in the galaxy to check out? Its a big place ain't it?

Live Long and Prosper.

Star Treks Starships Going Badly or Boldly?

NX-01 Enterprise
USS Chekov NCC-57302
USS Constellation NCC-1017
USS Constitution NCC-1700
USS Defiant NX-74205
USS Enterprise NCC-1701
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D
USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E
USS Excelsior NCC-2000
USS Jenolan NCC-2010
USS Pasteur NCC-58928
USS Stargazer NCC-2893
USS Yamato NCC-71807
USS Voyager NCC-74656
USS Discovery NCC 1031
USS Shenzhou

Heres a list of deep space, high tech, high spec, diplomatic, warp speed starships. At least 12 are battle cruisers commissioned by Starfleet on planet Earth since the Federations charter in 2161. Impressive isn't it?

The most famous starships in Earth history are the USS Enterprise ships - designed by Matt Jefferies and Andrew Probert seen here with the show's creator Gene Roddenberry.... but let's not forget Dr. Richard Daystrom who went completely mad designing computer systems, poor chap. The USS Enterprise represented true hope, vast technology, and service to humankind.

Now we're getting a new starship USS Discovery as producers at CBS Studios re-invent Star Trek's Prime universe without hopefully making a complete hash of Trek's timeline....So what in tarnation is going on?

I believe Star Treks problems can best be encapsulated by looking at just one STARSHIP!

The Enterprise NX 01!

So much was right about it. Doug Drexler's Enterprise styling was sensational despite getting canned by 7 time Emmy winner Dan Curry. Even today Enterprise NX-01 CGI exterior looks good. They even got the length right at 235 meters, the new Enterprise NX-01 is a bit smaller than Captain Kirks Enterprise NCC 1701 and a lot smaller than Captain Picard's flagship.

The name is cool too... Coming over for some Enterprise babe? ....(not a bad pick up line) surprise your friends with a trekkie goodie bag, for watching Star Trek at your place... Enterprise NX-01 was almost certainly the best W5 starship United Earth ever made...and riddled with faults. Chief among which is that important component called simply.... the engine.

When the Enterprise NX-01 was being designed CBS had access to the most advanced Warp propulsion engineering on the planet (USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D)  Ever wonder why Captain Picard starship (USS Enterprise-D) was able to travel an impressive 2.7 million light years away from earth in minutes? compared to USS Voyager's NCC-74656 mere 70,000 light year trip into the Delta Quadrant?

Picards Warp 9.9 starship engine was and still is a magnificent engine. Light, compact, powerful and endlessly tunable and reliable so it was a natural CBS would use it in the Enterprise NX-01, right? Nope. Sadly not, CBS (Herman Zimmerman, Brannon Braga and Rick Berman) decided it would be far better to create a new warp engine based on Zefram Cochranes Phoenix test flight in 2063. As ideas go this was a bad one.

The engine that resulted was not magnificent at all and took United Earth 32 years to create a theoretical maximum speed of 4.5! Enterprise NX-01's engine had lots of problems. It wouldn't stay cool and when it got hot which it did the ship was close to blowing up. In engineering terms it was a disaster.... as a result Star Treks Enterprise series was withdrawn after 4 years in 2005 and killed off before hitting its 100 episode.

Its mad the "5 captains" starships were all part of the same company! So why didn't Enterprise NX-01 use one of the tried and tested USS Enterprise NCC 1701 engine?

So now heres the greatest battle of them all. The USS Discovery NCC 1031 vs USS Shenzhou. Deciding which is worst is like deciding which part of your brain you want amputated.

I'd give the Shenzhou Commander Burnham one mark just for sounding tough with the Aliens. (Tiny Print). USS Discovery gets two marks for effort at least those guys are being original by copying Ralph McQuarries Spaceship design. So there you have it.

The Enterprise NX-01 wins, it's worse than the Shenzhou and the USS Discovery NCC 1031 which must make it one of worse starships ever made. - 98 episodes of Star Trek Enterprise are still running on TV!! Do you feel a sense of pride? Which starship is your least favorite and why?

Live Long and Prosper.
