WHY V'GER CHOSE ILIA - STAR TREK TMP

Jerry Goldsmith wrote the music soundtrack for Star Trek the Motion Picture which later became the fanfare for Star Trek TNG. 1995 was the year I bought all 178 episodes of Star Trek TNG. Each season was 106 euro which wasn't cheap for me. Today you can buy a used Star Trek TNG Season 1 for £6.49 can you believe that?

DECKER TRYING TO REVIVE ILIAS "data memory patterns"
by placing the headband on her head but why? - When Decker begins to fall for the exact replica of "Ilia" standing before him Dr McCoy speaks up.
THIS IS JUST A MECHANISM!

I got my "I AM Spock" signed biography from leonard Nimoy that year - yeah I thought things were looking good. I was only 25 ready to explore galaxies. I remember watching Star Treks first movie with friends who loved the special effects, "star trek is cool" overall TMP is a good flick - you'll appreciate the plot is drawn from the slow moving coldness of Space Odyssey and Star Trek Changeling "Nomad" whose primary mission was to scientifically investigate new life forms.

"I LIKE TO SING, I FELT LIKE MUSIC"
NOMAD INVESTIGATING

Conversely V'ger programming is also at the heart of TMP plot. Its awesome watching lovely android Ilia makes her grand entrance to save the universe with Decker licking his wounds as the failed rightful Captain of the starship USS Enterprise NCC 1701. Meanwhile Spocks spacewalk mindmeld reveals.....

SPOCKS SECRET SPACEWALK

" Jim, Vgers programming is incomplete. Vger is cold, barren. This simple feeling - not possible.""Vger's asking questions, is this all that I am, is there nothing more?" - Spock

The poor machine was longing for human company all along.......

WHO do you think WON the JACKPOT in Star Trek The Motion Picture?

1. Decker gets Ilia

2. Captain Kirk gets the Enterprise

3. V'ger gets Emotions

Ilia

I is for Ilia but who is she? In Star Trek The Motion Picture we see a few brief glimpses of the beautiful Persis Khambatta who died tragically at only 47. Shes plays the first female officer to declare an 'Oath of Celibacy' aboard a Federation starship touching us with her empathic powers.

We know from Ilia's chat with Captain Kirk that Deltan culture is dominated by sexuality in stark contrast to Khambatta's emotionless V'ger mechanism. V'Ger beams android "Ilia" aboard the Enterprise to communicate and learn about the humans "infesting" the USS Enterprise 1701 and planet earth.

Ilia speaks for V'Ger now: "I have been programmed by V'ger to observe and record normal functioning of the carbon-based units infesting USS ENTERPRISE."

Kirk: Who is...'V'ger'...?

Ilia: "V'ger is that which programmed me."

Kirk: "Is V'ger the Captain of the alien vessel?"
Bones: "Jim, what the blazes...."

Ilia: "V'ger is that which seeks the Creator."

Bones: "Jim, this is a mechanism...!"

Kirk: "Where is Lt. Ilia?"

Ilia: "That unit no longer functions. I have been given its form to more readily communicate with the carbon-based units infesting Enterprise."

Security Guard: "Carbon-based units"...?

McCoy: "Humans, Ensign Lang, us!"

Kirk: "Why does V'ger travel to the third planet of the solar system directly ahead?"

Ilia: "V'ger travels to the third planet to find the Creator."

The women of Star Trek have rather more significant roles than those in other Tv shows watched by young audiences, like say Daisy in the Dukes of Hazzard. We had to wait until Star Trek Voyager arrived in 1995 before a woman took command aboard a starship. Its only fitting I suppose, that Star Trek is one of the first TV shows to deploy leading women on the front lines of Science Fiction.

Who would you prefer to serve under, Captain Kathryn Janeway (ST) or Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica?

Trek Thankyou to Fans

Heres a shot of the recreation-deck in Star Trek The Motion Picture which allows us to appreciate the entire crew of the starship Enterprise. Captain Kirk's been promoted to Admiral and hes the dude delivering the wonderful news about the bitter energy cloud on a direct collision heading with Earth. Scary stuff eh?

Their mission: survive V'gers great big bolts of fire and make friends with the thing. The Rec Deck falls silent. Its the moment of truth for Starfleet's bravest crew in the galaxy when the viewscreen flips on. They're the only crew available within range, of course... Way too late to back out now... still...everyones probably having second thoughts...

Why did I join Kirk's ship? Just look at those haunted faces staring at the Epsilon IX Station battling V'ger's wrath. Hey, we won't judge you for tucking tail and abandoning the Enterprise during Earth's hour of need, explains the Admiral pulling a blinder.

Image Owner/Creator: Paramount Pictures and/or CBS Studios.

So the USS Enterprise NCC 1701 crew swallow their fears despite seeing their Klingons buddies biting the dust. Why be afraid? V'Ger only intends to deactivate Earths 'carbon based units' unless they yield the creator, "The Kirk Unit." who built Voyager One. The strange, sentient, cloudlike creature/machine thing is a technologically enhanced ancient earth probe measuring two AU's across!

Sounds seriously meaningful doesn't it? So I looked it up. The V'ger cloud is 200 million miles across big but get this, V'ger is lonely and wants to experience some simple human feelings by joining with the creator. How sweet is that? I feel so emotional right now.

Amid the hundreds of Enterprise crew members staring up at the recreational deck viewer are about 150 fans and friends of the movie production. Their inclusion was the studios way of saying Thank You to the Fans for their valuable support of Star Trek over the years.

Star Trek Tradition, Logic and the Needs of the Many.

Star Trek XI is now the second highest earner of Star Treks franchise with takings of $222.7 million in 31 days. This movie warped past the Wrath of Khan and has set its trajectory to overtake the reigning Star Trek epic of the universe held by Star Trek The Motion Picture. Star Trek I bagged $139,000,000 for Paramount which is a cool measure of success and a ton of money for 1979. You can bet your Trekkie dvds it won't take seven years for the next Star Trek movie to hit the big screens.

Logic dictates the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few or the one. Does it matter Star Trek XI messed with the Final Frontier? Yesss! and what a reaction its getting from the fans. Sure, Star Trek's space time continuum has been altered but judging from the figures, previews and reports from accross the internet, Star Trek XI is successfully reaching out to people boldly going where Trek hasn't been in years.

(Blashememy!!! I can hear horrified Trekkies gasping.) "Your'e crossing over to the dark side aren't you!!" but nooooo, I'd never do that! I'm just trying to be logical about this and remember its Spock Prime's fault we're in this fine mess int the first place. Just kidding, I'm skylarking now.

Star Trek has a lot of canon, rules and regulations known as "Trek" which can influence the eventual outcome of life and death in its timeline. For example, the Pon Far involves the Vucan Mating ceremony whereby Mr Spock is compelled to return home every seven years to purge his emotions. The poor vulchie will die unless he mates with a Vulcan chick or fights to the death with a suitor of T'pring's choice.

In any case, it really doesn't matter because Vulcans are born with superior strength and whoever is selected by T'Pring, is gonna get the spuds whacked out of him. Unfortunately she chose Captain Kirk of the starship Enterprise to fight Spock and Mr spock HAD to engage him! "This is a fight to the death". warned T'Pau. "Do not interfere!!"

In this episode of Amok Time, we get to see the Vulcan's homeworld for the first time and an angry Spock who's clearly not himself. Stricken with the desperate need to contol his desires, a much beleagured Spock is in deep meditation preparing himself for the Kal-if-fee. It was'nt until after the challenge that the flawed human half in him was torn appart by remorse. These are the downfalls of living your life in the pursuit of absolute logic......

The Vulcan Ponn Farr ritual eliminates the deadly imbalance of toxins poisoning Spock's body only after the Vulcan has gone through hell (Burning of the blood) and ranting and raving like a complete lunatic but this is all perfectly normal for vulchies. In the end Spock is returned to his good old emotionless, logical self after his mating urges are quenched with the knowledge that his good friend and captain has been strangled to death by his very own hands.

Ever since Star Trek Nemises flopped at the box office in 2002 with only $43,254,409 to show for at home in the US, Star Trek has been in need of an additional generation of fans willing to give themselves over to an inspiring, action adventure with gratifying computer graphics, sound effects, lighting and movie sets essential to producing a rip-roaring action movie prequel with a stimulating and entertaining trek timeline. That time has arrived, Star Trek is back!

"Doctor, I shall be resigning my commission, of course..."
"Uh, Spock..."
"...so, I would appreciate your making the final arrangements."
"Spock, I..."
"Doctor, please, let me finish. There can be no excuse for the crime of which I'm guilty - I intend to offer no defense. Furthermore, I shall order Mr. Scott to take immediate command of this vessel."
"Don't you think you better check with me first?"
"Captain?!?! JIM!!!"

- Spock, McCoy, and, much to Spock's surprise, Kirk.
